Birthday party food for kids with food allergies?
Tuesday, September 9th, 2008There shouldn’t be any reason that you can’t take cupcakes, if you’re willing to put in a little extra work.
We love Cherrybrook Kitchen products–they’re super easy to make. They’re boxed goodies like chocolate cake (my son’s favorite), chocolate chip cookies, vanilla cake, frostings, etc. They’re nut and dairy free (so long as you follow the recipe).
For a dairy-free product, you MUST NOT use regular butter in any of the recipes. In place of butter, we like to use Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread (100% Vegan, Non-Hydrogenated Oils).
Also, make sure that you don’t use spoons, knives, cutting boards, etc. that might have had nuts or dairy products on them. (Cross-contamination could be a big problem for someone with extreme allergies.)
You can find all of this at Henry’s Markets. I’ve also found the Cherrybrook Kitchen line at Bristol Farms.
If you talk to the preschool administrator (and maybe bring the box showing the ingredients), I’d think they would be ok bringing your treats.
If they don’t go for that (or if it’s too much work), maybe bring a fruit sorbet for a treat … or some other fun “fresh fruit” salad ingredients that the kids can put together as a birthday activity … or if you have time, bring fruits, ice, and a blender and make them smoothies. I’ve done this at my son’s preschool and the kids loved it.
Good Luck and Have Fun!!
